I’ve often found that it’s a hallmark of exceptional individuals to devote time and energy studiously mastering some obscure art or hobby. By putting effort into something that others do not value, it implicitly helps develop a self-identity that is secure in being contrarian and independent in one’s thinking. This is key because it helps create a keener sense of being able to tell what really matters, rather than being overly-influenced by trends and fads.
